John E. Zion Profile Photo

John Zion was born November 2, 1947, and passed away on September 27, 2006.

He was the second son of Elbert and LuJean Zion. From the time he was small, John loved animals and delighted in picking them up and carrying them around the yard. Over the years, he raised chickens, ducks, geese, pigs, sheep, and cattle, along with a horse or two.

John graduated from Wray High School. He worked for local neighbors, including the Wingfields and the Younts, as well as helping his uncles and his father. When he received his draft notice, he boarded the train and went east, where he learned a new way of life. After completing his service, he returned home to farm.

John gradually built his herd until, one day at the Co-op while picking up feed, he discovered the rest of his herd— Patty, she came along with two cute little girls, and she also brought skills of her own, including cooking and bookkeeping.

Over time, John and his family built a home and a business and welcomed three sons. In his spare time, he enjoyed woodworking, teaching Sunday school, and playing pool.
