Derry Diehl

Derry Diehl, age 76, of Laird, passed away peacefully on 31 July 2026 with family at his side. His strong faith was a touchstone through life, summed up in his tattoo that read “If God brings you to it, he will bring you through it“.

He was born on 27 January, 1950 to Harvey W Diehl and Betty Jane Diehl (nee Johnson) of Moline, Illinois. He grew up in Essex Iowa and was confirmed in his Lutheran faith in 1963. In 1968 he graduated from Essex High School and proudly went on to serve in the US Air Force from 1968-1976.

After his 8 years in the military, Derry brought his family to Laird Colorado and worked for the Burlington Northern Railroad. After retiring from the railroad, Derry needed to stay busy so he worked in ways to stay connected with, and give back to the community. He worked with the Wray Senior Center, the WRAC, and County Express. He was a primary caregiver for his mother, and also for Dee’s parents in their later years.

Above all else, he was devoted to his family. He married the love of his life, Delores Diehl (nee Weed), on 14 February 1970, and for 56 years they built a life centered on love, laughter, and family. He cherished every moment he spent with his children and grandchildren .

He enjoyed long-distance motorcycle trips, touring the wild places in America, and watching old westerns. He will be remembered for his kindness, his generosity, and his love. He was so proud of the accomplishments of his family, and of his community service. He made everyone he touched feel loved and valued. He served as a stand-in father and grandfather for so many.

He is survived by his wife, Delores Diehl; his children Michael Diehl (married Kendel), Brett Diehl (married Vicki), and Cassandra Diehl. His daughter-of-the-heart Julie Green (married Matthew). His grandchildren Geoffrey Diehl (partner Lena Kariuki), Nicholas Diehl, Eli Diehl, and Anne Diehl. His grand-daughter-of-the-heart Piper Green. His sister Pam Ketchum, and numerous cousins, nieces, and nephews.

He is proceeded in death by his parents, Harvey and Betty, and by his brother Larry.

Funeral services will be held at Calvary Lutheran Church on Friday, August 7 at 2pm.

His family finds comfort in knowing that his memory lives on through the love that he shared, the values he instilled, and the countless lives that he touched. He will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered.
